Chapter 13

Trouble On Wedding Day

Then, just like they had been discussing the weather, Little Bear asked about the Pawnee, “Do you think they will return? He asked.”

“Of course,” Gray Horse said. “The Pawnee is slow to learn; not until all Pawnee are dead will they stop trying.”

“Gray Wolf has sent wolves to the south and the east to look for a war party, and if they come we will be ready,” Gray Horse said.

Little Bear thought for a moment then he said, “It is time that I announce to the camp that Sun Bird and Storm Warrior are to be made one and that Storm Warrior will be Sun Bird’s husband and that I welcome Storm Warrior into my family.”

Then Gray Wolf said, “I will announce that Sun Bird will be Storm Warrior’s squaw and that I welcome Sun Bird into my family.”

Then Gray Horse laughed, “This will be good, I do not want Storm Warrior to become angered at any of my Braves for trying to win the heart of his squaw, we do not wish to awaken the sleeping bear, there have been too many burials already.”

With that, they all laughed, and then they stood and parted after shaking hands while Sun Bird beamed with joy.

Storm Warrior had been waiting in his teepee for what seemed like hours. Finally, Gray Wolf and Gray Horse came to his teepee, and they greeted.

“I have bad news,” Gray Wolf said, “Little Bear has turned your offer down, and he will give Sun Bird to another warrior.”

Storm Warrior didn’t know what to say; he looked at Gray Wolf in shock.

Then Gray Wolf laughed, “It is a joke; it is always a good joke. Sun Bird will be your squaw for seven ponies.”

“But I only have eight ponies,” Storm Warrior said, “And I want to keep the black stallion, Sun Flower, and the Paint.”

Gray Wolf smiled, “Yes I know, that is why both Gray Horse and I have each given you one of our ponies as a gift for your wedding.”

“I think you should keep the big black to carry you across the plains swiftly, the mare that you rode to escape the whites and the paint mustang mare that Chief Red Bear gave you for Sunbird to ride, and give the other five, but the choice is yours,” Gray Wolf said.

“Yes,” Storm Warrior said, “All five ponies are good stock, and they will make Little Bear good ponies.”

“Come,” Gray Wolf said; “We must collect the ponies for payment; you must lead them through the camp to Little Bear’s teepee so all will know that payment has been made. This is custom so that no one can question your right to Sun Bird.”

Gray Wolf and Storm Warrior walked through the camp, and Gray Horse had already announced the word.

Gray Wolf stopped at the central fire and announced that Storm Warrior and Sun Bird will be joined as one in the morning. “We go now to collect the ponies for payment,” Gray Wolf announced.
